Summer Operation Hours Begin May 13

Starting May 13th, Tiger Pantry will only be holding summer hours. Operations will be from 4:30 P.M.-6:30 P.M. on Wednesdays. Tiger Pantry will also be open the Sunday after stop day (May 12).

April Food Drives

The Business Week Service Committee and the University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business for made Tiger Pantry the beneficiary of Business Week 2013. Over 700 items were donated to help support the Mizzou family!

The Student Nurses Association at Sinclair School of Nursing held a week-long food drive to benefit Tiger Pantry, bringing in a large number of donations will be used to keep Tiger Pantry’s supply strong!

Food Fight 2013 Recap

The blossoming SEC rivalry between Mizzou and the University of Arkansas extended beyond athletics as MU’s Tiger Pantry went up against UArk’s Full-Circle Food Pantry during Food Fight 2013. The event was a campus-wide food drive competition to see which school could raise the most food and funds for their respective food pantry. The food drive began February 27^th and lasted until March 5^th when Mizzou brought in a win against UArk in men’s basketball. By the end Food Fight, Mizzou had collected over 600 pounds of food, and $1900 in monetary donations.

After all the points were tallied, Full-Circle Food Pantry came out on top with over 7000 points. Tiger Pantry fell short with a collection of 5,745 points.

Hunger Dinner 2013

Participants of the Hunger Dinner, hosted by MSA, were given certain portions of food to symbolize a certain lifestyle, showing how not everyone has the same access to food.

Description: Food insecurity is limited or uncertain access to adequate and nutritious food. Although food insecurity is often seen as an abstract problem that happens in countries far away, the reality is that there are people in our campus community who experience food insecurity every day. Come hear from a panel of students at Mizzou as they discuss their experience with being food insecure on Mizzou’s campus.

What is Tiger Pantry?

Tiger Pantry is a fully operational food pantry for students, staff, and faculty in need. Clients may use the pantry once a month and we provide food for all members of their household that register with us. The pantry is so much more than just a supplement of food and a temporary fix, it is going to be part of the solution. In the pantry, we will be informing clients of other resources that they may not even know about such as: assisting clients in signing up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), referring clients to the Office of Financial Success, connecting parents to Parent Link, providing educational materials on nutrition, referring clients to the Wellness Resource Center, referring clients to the services of the Student Health Center or University Health Care. These are only some of the ways that we are going to be part of the solution. All that is needed to be a client of the pantry is a valid Mizzou ID.

Here are some stats on poverty and hunger in Missouri:

MO has the 7^th highest rate of food insecurity in the nation (Nov. 2010)

MO has the 6^th highest rate of very low food security at 6.4% (National Avg. 5.2%)

15% of Missourians are food insecure (National Avg. 13.5%)

MO experienced a 4.9% increase in food insecurity since 1994 (National Avg. 2.2%)

12.3% households food is uncertain

19.1% households with children food uncertain

4.6% food uncertain with hunger

19.6% SNAP/food stamps income eligible

19.3% child poverty rate in MO (2009)

Here are some facts and statistics specific to the University of Missouri:

15,000+ students on need based aid

6,000+ students that are recipients of pell grants

1,000+ students that have an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) between $0-$1,000

nearly 20 students reported that they were homeless last semester

We have a large international student population that sometimes struggle financially for many reasons

Many staff members are paid at or below the poverty level and have to support families

Some graduate students are paid extremely low stipends and have to support families
